Coach's Corner

Hey everyone! Hope you all had a great summer and the new school year is off to a good start for you! I was pleased at our summer practice week. I think we will have a solid group this year on varsity and have an outstanding JV team with all the freshman we have coming in this year.

With approval from our school board, I am excited to introduce this year's coaching staff. Alfonso Murano will be coming back to the program to be assistant varsity coach. Alfonso was an assistant coach during my first two years, and the JV coach for two years prior to that.

New this year will be Tony Smith. Tony has been an outstanding coach for the pony league all the way down to the Shetland Division. Tony leads by example and will be a great addition to the staff.

Joe Wald will be coming back for his second year with us. Joe saved us last year by taking over the JV team mid-way through the season. Joe has also coached at every level at Vashon Youth Baseball & Softball (VYBS).

Mark Leonard hopes to be back for his 7th season. Mark coached the JV team his first two years and has been the assistant varsity coach the last five years. If Mark is able to join us, it will be in a diminished role this year due to travel and business, but we will be happy to have him anytime he can make it.

And, of course, it wouldn't be Pirate Baseball without the Dean of Vashon baseball ~ Jim Martin.

Please do not come into our season out of shape! You need to be playing catch, lifting weights, and running as much as you can. Get yourself into one of the many camps available. Starting in January, the gym will be open on Sundays for you to workout. On sunny days, Wes Paulsen would like to try getting guys out on the field ~ contact Wes directly if you are interested.

A Message to Parents about Fundraising ~ Fundraising is very important to keep our program going. Please consider saving your Thriftway receipts to participate in our 1% Rebate Program, provided by the generosity of Norm Matthews. All you do is sign the back of the receipt, put your telephone number on it, and turn it in to me at the Thriftway. Other fund-raising activities may include car washes, magazine subscription sales, T-Shirt and Hat sales, and running a concession stand at home games. These are all things we may need to do during tight economic times. Remember, we work during the current year to fund the next year's program. For Seniors, this doesn't mean your job is done. Seniors before you have participated in fundraising so that the players coming after them could have more than they did. So, please do your part to support whatever fundraising activities we need done.

Our Game Schedule will slowly get filled in. Please have patience and check it out under Schedules on this site.

Thank You for your support!
