Cold Bats Lead to Varsity Loss

On a very cold first day of Spring, the VHS Pirate varsity lost their first game of the season to Steilacoom yesterday 3-0. Arriving at the field late due to taking a later than normal ferry, the team had little time to warm up prior to the game. And it showed on the offensive end of things. Vashon's only hits were generated by Max Bean, Justin Calhoun, and Tom Schumaker. In the sixth inning the Pirates had a chance to score, after loading the bases with no outs, but the Steilacoom pitcher rose to the occasion and got the next three batters out without allowing a run. Micah Deibell opened the game on the mound for Vashon and pitched five good innings allowing six hits and striking out four. He gave up only two walks. Eric Anderson pitched the last inning and had one strikeout. The Pirates played well defensively as Schumaker threw out another runner trying to steal second base. And on the base paths, Calhoun had a stolen base. Game photos here. Next game (weather permitting) at Heidelberg Park on 3/23 at 6:15 against Life Christian.
