Pirates Lose Game One In Districts

Vashon hit the road on 5/7 and headed north to Coupeville on Whidbey Island for their first battle in District playoffs. A win against the Wolves of Coupeville would send them directly to State, while a loss would dictate another qualifying game to be played later in the week. The Pirates lost 4-2. Pirate ace Micah Deibell was on the mound for Vashon and was cruising along with a 2-0 lead through four innings. However, due to walks, a scratch hit, and Vashon miscues, Coupeville was able to put up four runs on the board in the fifth, which put them ahead 4-2. And, as it turned out, that's all the runs they would need. Chris Pieterick came on in relief in the fifth and finished out the game. The Pirate pitching duo only allowed four hits, but the walks and porous defense were too much for Vashon to overcome. The Pirates collected seven hits on the day-all singles. Tom Schumaker led the way going 2 for 2, while Pieterick, Matt Amick, Justin Calhoun, Deibell, and Joe Gilmour all had single hits. The "heads up" play of the day went to Schumaker, who alertly stole home in the fourth after an out was made and the ball was still "live" He caught the Wolves napping, who assumed time had been called. The Pirates now must play Seattle Christian on 5/10. The winner advances to State. The loser goes home.
