Pirates Host First Alumni Baseball Game

Micah Deibell (Class of 2008)

Lester Gannaw at Bat (Class of 2007); Peter Johnson Catching
Chad Tillman (Class of 2005)
Despite the expected rainout, the sun rose brightly over Jim Martin Field on Saturday, April 2 – just in time for the Jim Martin Inaugural Alumni Game.  We believe it would have made Jim happy to see former Pirates players of all ages getting together to play once a year with their old coaches and teammates, and this day would not disappoint.

We’d like to thank current Pirates players who turned out for this game to help field the two teams.  It was great fun having Coach Hall don catcher’s gear for a couple of innings, as it was having Tyler Bernheisel mowing down Pirates batters of all ages.

Ben Hanusa (Class of 2007)

The unquestioned play of the day went to Ben Hanusa, with his diving catch in left field.  Ben (class of 2007) proved he still has what it takes to be a Pirate.
Steve Hall Catching, Nathan Ott (Class of 2008) at Bat
Tyler Bernheisel
Other noteworthy performances were made by pitchers Justin Calhoun, Chris Allman, and Micah Deibell (Class of 2008), Matt Amick (Class of 2010), and Greg Applegate (Class of 2003).  Lester Gannaw (Class of 2007) demonstrated his trademark first baseman’s lunge.
Greg Applegate (Class of 2002)

We also want to thank Vashon Island photographer John Sage for taking photographs – check out John’s work at:  http://www.finchhaven.com/

Chris Allman (Class of 2008)
Many thanks to ‘celebrity chefs’ Rick Powelson and Chris Ott for coming out of retirement to feed everybody at the barbeque.  The day ended with a raffle drawing for Mariner tickets, a Dan Wilson autographed game ball, and Pirates Baseball hooded sweatshirts.
Justin Calhoun (Class of 2008)

Big league thanks to Jeff Johnson for umpiring and the field crew for making the field playable.  The real prize of the day, however, was visiting with old friends – both players and families – involved with Pirates Baseball over many years.  We will definitely be doing this again!
