Varsity Pirates Open Season With Impressive Win

The Pirates opened the 2007 baseball season yesterday with a 9-6 win over the Chief Sealth team from West Seattle. Eric Anderson opened the game on the mound for Vashon, pitching three innings with two strikeouts. Micah Deibell pitched the next three innings and also finished with two strikeouts. Chris Pieterick pitched the final inning with two K's as well.
The Pirate's hitting attack was led by Max Bean and Tom Schumaker, both who went 2 for 4.
Chris Allman, Deibell , and Pieterick all contributed with RBI singles. Justin Calhoun, Byron Starkey, and Nathan Ott all had singles as well.
Vashon displayed an aggressive running game highlighted by Anderson's great slide at home, scoring and avoiding the tag by the Chief Sealth catcher. Defensive gems were turned in by Schumaker behind the plate who picked off a runner at third and also threw out at runner at third. Another highlight in the field was provided by Anderson (playing shortstop) who made a diving stop behind second base and flipped the ball to Bean for the force at second. A nice win for the Pirates with contributions from everyone. Game pictures available here.
