Pirates Win Another Close One

The Vashon Pirates entertained the Patriots from Washington HS on Saturday (4/5) under typical chilly spring conditions. The Pirates came away with a 5-4 victory in the non league affair. Chris Allman started on the mound for Vashon and pitched a nice game. Through four innings he had seven strike outs, two walks, and allowed only one hit. And the Pirates held a 3-0 lead with all three runs scoring in the third inning. In the fifth the wheels started to come off as Allman gave up a single, hit a batter, and then walked a batter to fill the bases with no outs. This prompted coach Hall to bring on Chris Pieterick in relief. When the dust had settled, Washington had scored four runs and taken the lead 4-3. However, that lead would not last for long as Vashon came back to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth with a solo HR off the bat of Justin Calhoun. Pieterick shut down the Patriot bats in the final two innings, so the game remained tied as the bottom of the seventh unfolded. The first hitter up was Pieterick who singled sharply through the infield. He moved to second on a balk. The next batter was Micah Deibell and he put a quick end to the game by hitting a RBI single and scoring the winning run. Vashon collected seven hits on the day. Calhoun led the way going 2 for 3 with the HR and a single. Pieterick also was 2 for 3 with a two RBI double and a single. Allman and Deibell each added singles and VJ Ashbaugh had a double to round out the Pirate attack. Coach Hall posted the following starting lineup: Chris Pieterick (ss), Micah Deibell (cf), Chris Allman (p), Tom Schumaker (c), Geran Webb (1b), Justin Calhoun (2b), Evan Bell (3b), Adam Powelson (lf), VJ Ashbaugh (rf). The victory improved the Pirate record to 4-2 on the year. The team now takes some time off for spring break and will begin practicing again on Thursday (4/10). League play resumes in earnest the week of 4/14 with three big games. Check the schedule for days and times. Next home game is Friday (4/18). Come out and support your team.
