Pirates Win Thriller 5-3

The Vashon Pirates traveled to Seattle on 4/2 to take on the Warriors of Seattle Christian HS in a key league game. Senior ace Micah Deibell was on the hill for the Pirates and pitched his usual solid game. In his five innings of work, Deibell had eleven strike outs, three walks, and gave up only three hits. Unfortunately, the last hit was a solo HR, putting Vashon on the short end of a 3-2 score. This prompted coach Steve Hall to bring on Chris Pieterick to pitch the final two innings. Pieterick quickly closed the door bringing an end to the sixth . Which leads us to the drama in the top of the seventh with the Pirates having only three outs left to manufacture a run. Geran Webb led off the inning with a single. Then Senior Chris Allman, batting in the three position, calmly stepped to the plate and hit a laser shot over the centerfield fence giving Vashon a sudden and dramatic 4-3 lead. The Pirate players and fans were ecstatic. And then to help seal the deal, later in the inning, Deibell hit a solo HR to put Vashon up 5-3 going into the bottom of the seventh. Pieterick held the Warriors scoreless in their half of the inning and the Pirates had secured their second league victory of the year. They are now 2-1 in league and 3-2 overall. Vashon collected ten hits on the afternoon. Allman led the way going 3 for 4 with the two run HR and a two run single in the third inning. Deibell was 2 for 2 with a HR. Webb and Tom Schumaker each had two hits and Evan Bell added a single. Defensively, the Pirates snuffed out a potential run at the plate when third baseman Bell fielded a slow roller and gunned a throw to catcher Schumaker who masterfully blocked home and applied the tag. The game was delayed in the top of the third inning for about 30 minutes as the plate umpire was recovering from a foul tip which struck him in the upper chest area. To be safe, medics were called and thankfully the ump checked out ok and play resumed with the two umpires trading positions. Coach Hall fielded the following starting lineup for the game: Chris Pieterick (ss), Geran Webb (lf), Chris Allman (cf), Tom Schumaker (c), Justin Calhoun (2b), Micah Deibell (p), Evan Bell (3b), Nathan Ott (1b), Adam Powelson (rf), Matt Amick (dh). Next scheduled game (rain permitting) is 4/5 at home against Washington. Game time 12 noon. Come on out.
