Pirates Win Again In Convincing Fashion

For the second day in a row, the Varsity Pirates saw their game end early due to the ten run rule. Yesterday (4/19) they dispatched the Tarriers from Charles Wright Academy 13-3 in five innings. Coach Hall's lineup featured Eric Anderson on the mound, Tom Schumaker behind the plate, Lester Gannaw at first, Max Bean at second, Chris Pieterick at short, and Justin Calhoun at third. In the outfield, Ben Hanusa was in left, Chris Allman in center, and Micah Deibell was the right fielder. Vashon was down early in the first inning when the second batter of the game hit a long home run to left field giving the Tarriers a brief 2-0 lead. The Pirates would answer with four runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. The Vashon lead was 6-3 going into the bottom of the fifth when the Pirates struck for seven runs and put an end to the affair. Eric Anderson pitched the entire game for Vashon, allowing only five hits and striking out five. Tom Schumaker led the offense with a 2 for 3 day including an RBI double. Micah Deibell and Justin Calhoun each contributed RBI doubles as well. Gerran Webb, Eric Anderson, and Chris Allman all added singles. And Byron Starkey had a two RBI single in the decisive fifth inning. On the base paths, lead off hitter Max Bean had two stolen bases to help the Pirate cause. Defensively, third baseman Calhoun made a beautiful stop and throw to nail the runner at first. For the game, the totals for Vashon were 13 runs, 8 hits, and 1 error, while the visitors had 3 runs, 5 hits, and 5 costly errors. The only damper on an otherwise festive afternoon of baseball for the Pirates was the shoulder injury to Deibell incurred while sliding into third base. He will most likely be lost to the team for two weeks. We wish him a speedy recovery. The Pirates now find themselves in sole possession of third place in the Nisqually League, only one half game behind second place Orting. Next up is Life Christian on Monday (4/23) on the Vashon field at 4pm. Don't miss out-there are only two home games left.
