Varsity Pirates Win

The Vashon Pirates and the Cougars of Cascade Christian met yesterday (4/18) for the second time this season. The previous game was played in Puyallup and Vashon was able to eke out a 3-2 win. The second encounter took place at the VHS home field and the Pirates came away with a more comfortable 10-0 victory. The game was played under ominous rain clouds and play was stopped briefly in the sixth inning due to rain, but the game resumed shortly thereafter. However, the proceedings would soon end due to the ten run rule, rather than the whims of Mother Nature. Justin Calhoun started on the mound for the Pirates and pitched the entire six innings. He was in control the entire game, allowing only three hits and striking out 12 batters. Vashon started their scoring with three runs in the third inning, followed by one in the fourth, and finishing the contest with six runs in the sixth. Leading the hitting attack were Eric Anderson, Tom Schumaker, and Calhoun, each going 2 for 3. Max Bean was 2 for 5. And Chris Pieterick, Micah Deibell, and Lester Gannaw all added singles. The Pirates tallied 10 runs, 11 hits, and 1 error, while the visitors had no runs, 3 hits, and 4 errors. Vashon had two very nice defensive plays in the game. Gannaw made a great diving stop and unassisted putout at first base, stifling a potential Cougar rally. Earlier in the game, Deibell made a beautiful throw from right field to nail an advancing runner at third base. Vashon improved their league record to 4-2. Next game is today (4/19) at VHS against Charles Wright. Time: 4pm. See you there.
