Pirates Win A Thriller

The Varsity Pirates won a nail biter yesterday over the Life Christian Eagles 7-4. The game was played on a beautiful spring-like day at Heidelberg Park in Tacoma. The Eagles did not look like a team that was still looking for their first victory of the season. They played the Pirates tough and held a 4-3 lead going into the seventh inning. That would soon change. With one out, Max Bean got on base via an infield hit. Bean then stole second and third. Then, with two outs and the game in the balance, Justin Calhoun stroked a double and tied the game at four. Chris Allman was up next and was hit by a pitch. Tom Schumaker followed with a roller up the third base line which went for a single. Bases loaded. Lester Gannaw then stepped up to the plate and calmly laced a double, clearing the bases, and securing the victory for Vashon. Calhoun pitched the entire game for the Pirates, striking out 13 batters (for the second time this season) and allowing only five hits. The Vashon offense was led by the hot bat of Allman who went 3 for 3 and raised his batting average to an even .500 for the season. Calhoun was 2 for 4 with a triple and the game-tying double. Eric Anderson and Schumaker both were 2 for 4 as well. Chris Pieterick and Bean both added singles. And, of course, there was the game winning double by Gannaw. Next up for the Pirates is a road game today against Foster.
