Pirates Fall To Orting

The Vashon Pirates traveled to Orting HS on 4/28 to take on the Cardinals with first place on the line. And despite a beautifully pitched game from starter Micah Deibell, the Pirates found themselves on the short end of a 4-1 final score. Deibell limited the heavy hitting Cardinals to just two hits (one of them being a solo HR in the third inning) and one earned run. This was no doubt the best pitching effort that the Orting team had seen all year. Deibell also collected nine strikeouts, walked only two, and pitched a compete game. His valiant pitching effort went to waste however due to four Vashon errors leading to three unearned runs. The Pirates outhit their opponents five to two with their lone run coming on a solo HR by Justin Calhoun in the second inning. It was Vashon's ninth home run of the season. Wes Paulsen was 2 for 3 with two singles, Tom Schumaker had a double, and Chris Pieterick added a single. In contrast to Vashon, the Cardinals displayed some good defense, especially in their center fielder, who nearly robbed Calhoun of his HR by making a great catch and falling over the center field fence and out of the field of play. He later did rob Peter Johnson of a hit by making a shoe top grab in shallow left center. The Pirates did have one defensive gem when Pieterick made a great falling down catch of a pop up down the left field line. Vashon falls to 6-3 in league and is currently in second place with three games yet to be played. Next up is a twin bill with Chimacum tomorrow (4/30) at the Vashon home field. First pitch is at 2:30. There will be a brief ceremony between games honoring the six Pirate seniors. Also, the concession stand will be open serving great food. Come on out and enjoy some baseball.
