Pirates Sweep Doubleheader

On 4/26 Vashon played a rare Saturday doubleheader on their home field against the visiting Eagles from Life Christian HS. It was a beautiful spring-like day and baseball was in the air as this was also the opening day for the VYBS program. There were parades and speeches and concession stands and, of course, baseball games. It was decided prior to the doubleheader that two five inning games would be played due to the heavy schedules each team faces in the upcoming week. Wes Paulsen was the starting pitcher in the first game and pitched a four hit complete game as the Pirates won 8-2. Vashon took control of the game in the second inning when they put up seven runs on the board. The hitting attack was led by Chris Allman who was 2 for 2 with a two run single and Tom Schumaker who was 2 for 3 with a two run triple. Justin Calhoun also went 2 for 3. Chris Pieterick, Micah Deibell, and Adam Powelson all added singles and Nathan Ott clubbed a double to round out the ten Pirate hits. Allman made the defensive play of the game with a grab in deep right center to snuff out a potential Eagle rally in the third. After a 30 minute break, game two began. Chris Allman was on the hill for Vashon and pitched a three hit complete game shutout. Final score: Vashon 10, Life Christian 0. The Pirate bats were still hot from the first game as they collected fourteen more hits in the nightcap. Allman again set the pace going 3 for 4 with a one run double. Chris Pieterick, Micah Deibell, and Justin Calhoun all were 2 for 4 for the game. Adam Powelson, Peter Johnson, Wes Paulsen, Matt Amick, and Tom Schumaker all added singles to the hit parade. In fact, everyone in the lineup had at least one hit. That's the first time that has happened this year. The two victories put the Pirates into a first place tie with Orting, which just so happens to be the next opponent on the Vashon schedule. The game is on Monday (4/28) at Orting. Game time is 4pm. See you there.
