Pirates Win Another Nail Biter

On Monday (4/21) Vashon traveled to Tacoma to take on the Tarriers of Charles Wright Academy. The Pirates came away with a 6-3 victory by scoring three runs in their final at bat to seal the deal. Micah Deibell started on the mound for Vashon and gave up only three hits over five innings. However, due to some control problems (three hit batters), some creative calls from behind the plate (four walks), and three Pirate errors, the Tarriers did put up three runs on the board. Chris Pieterick entered the game in the sixth with the score knotted at three and proceeded to pitch two scoreless innings. He struck out three and gave up only one hit. So the battle entered the top of the seventh with Vashon looking to score the go ahead run. With one down, Chris Allman legged out an infield single. He moved into scoring position by stealing second. Tom Schumaker then hit a towering fly ball for the second out of the inning. Justin Calhoun then stepped to the plate and delivered a clutch single to score Allman and giving the Pirates a one run lead. Matt Amick followed with a single and Wes Paulsen walked to load the bases. Nathan Ott then calmly lashed a deep two run single to left center to give Vashon three runs in the inning and a 6-3 win. The Pirates collected eight hits in the game. Paulsen led the attack with three singles. Allman was 2 for 4 with two singles, and Ott, Amick, and Calhoun all added singles as well. Defensively, Amick made a nice diving catch in right field to end the bottom of the fifth leaving the sacks loaded for Charles Wright. The linescore for the game: Vashon: 6 runs, 8 hits, 3 errors. Charles Wright: 3 runs, 4 hits, 2 errors. With the victory the Pirates are now 4-2 in league (tied for 1st as of this writing) and 6-3 overall. Next up is a rare Saturday(4/26) doubleheader at the Vashon field. First game is at 12:30. This begins a run of "six games in seven days" including two doubleheaders and the outcome of these games will determine the Pirates role in the upcoming playoffs.
