Pirates Split Doubleheader

The Cowboys of Chimacum came visiting on Wednesday (4/30) to play a pair of five inning games on the Vashon home field. The teams split the games with the Pirates winning the first one 6-2 and Chimacum taking the nightcap 2-0. Wes Paulsen started the opener and gave up only three hits, however two of them were solo home runs. He walked three and had two strikeouts. Chris Pieterick come on in the fourth inning inheriting a 5-2 lead. He quickly snuffed out a Cowboy rally with a double play ball and pitched two scoreless innings to preserve the win. Vashon took control of the game with five runs in the third inning. Tom Schumaker started the scoring with an RBI single, followed by a two run single from the bat of Justin Calhoun. Micah Deibell capped off the scoring with a massive two run HR-his fourth of the season. Schumaker added a final run in the fifth inning with a solo HR. He was 2 for 3 in the game, as was Calhoun. Chris Allman and Peter Johnson each had singles bringing the Pirate hit total to seven. Defensively, Calhoun made a nice stop of a scorching grounder at second base and Allman made a great throw from center field nailing a runner at second who was trying to extend a single into a double. For whatever reason, Vashon came out looking a little flat for the second game. Pieterick was on the hill for the Pirates and pitched a complete game, giving up five hits, striking out five, and walking only one. The Vashon bats were stoned cold however and they managed only one hit-a single from freshman Peter Johnson. The Cowboy pitcher Chance Eldrige stymied the Pirates with slow floaters, and even though they made lots of contact, the results were often long, lazy fly balls. To make matters worse, Vashon committed three errors. The loss puts their league record at 7-4 with one pivotal game remaining-a rematch with Orting on 5/2. Orting has already clinched first place. There's a lot at stake for the Pirates. A win clinches second place and a playoff game on 5/7, whereas a loss would force a tiebreaker game or games on 5/3. The results of the tiebreaker(s) could put Vashon in second, third, or even out of the playoffs (depending on what Chimacum does in a doubleheader on 5/2). Such excitement! Come on out and cheer on your Pirates. See you on 5/2 at Vashon. Game time is 4pm.
