The Vashon Pirates varsity team defeated Orting 13-7 Wednesday (March 24) on the Pirates home field. Orting is a perennial Nisqually League powerhouse, having qualified for state playoffs 4 of the past 6 years.
Junior Tyler Bernheisel pitched six strong innings and was supported by a strong defense, especially the solid outfield play of Senior Phillip Moyer and Freshman Zach Drape – who made a spectacular over-the-head catch with the bases loaded to snuff out a potential big inning by Orting. Wes Paulsen came on to close out the game in the 7th.
The Pirate bats came alive against two competent Orting pitchers. Highlights included a towering two-run home run by Sophomore Julian Smith, a three for four night by both Senior Wes Paulsen and Junior Peter Johnson. Paulsen was responsible for a team high four RBIs. Junior Matt Dick executed a perfect slash bunt for a timely two RBI single, while Senior Matt Amick tallied a single, double, and two RBIs.
Senior Joe Gilmour added an RBI double and Drape notched his first varsity hit. Vashon now has a record of 4 wins and 2 losses, and are 2 and 1 in league.
Coach Hall was a happy man – “Every call I made worked, and was executed perfectly. Tyler did a great job keeping them off balance.”
