On Monday (March 22), the Pirates JV defeated the Eatonville Cruisers 16-8 in a great come from behind victory. The Cruisers got off to a fast start with a run in the first off two quick Pirate errors. Vashon responded immediately.
Ben Reoux started off the first with a single to left center, stole second and then was picked off trying to steal third. Erik Powelson smashed a double down the left field line, went to third on a passed ball and scored when Joe Wald hit a nice two-strike pitch just inside the bag down the first baseline.
The game was back and forth until the bottom of the sixth when 8 of 9 Pirate batters scored, two of them twice!! Erik Powelson shut down the Eatonville batters in the top of the seventh on 10 pitches with two strikeouts.
Hitting stars included Fletcher Garrison 3 for 4 with 3 doubles, 4 RBIs, and 3 runs scored; Erik Powelson 3 for 5 with a double, 1 RBI, and 3 runs scored; Joe Wald 3 for 5 with 3 RBIs and 1 run scored; and Ben Reoux 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored.
Pitching stats: Dustin Corthell 4 innings pitched with 66 pitches, 6 strikeouts and 3 hits allowed; Erik Powelson 3 innings pitched with 46 pitches, 5 strikeouts, and 1 hit.
Although pleased with the victory, Coach Wald did have this comment after the game:
"Again errors (5) plagued us, not very good ‘Steve Hall’ baseball. We will be working on defense and base running (signs mostly) tomorrow!"
Next up is a road game against the Orting Cardinals on Wednesday, March 24.
