Cascade Christian Topples Pirates

Vashon hit the road on May 4 and played the Cougars of Cascade Christian.  The game was rescheduled from the previous day due to rain.  The Pirates took an early 4-0 lead, but the Cougars struck for six runs in the bottom of the second giving them a 6-4 lead, which they held until the bottom of the fifth when they added on eight more runs ending the game on the ten run rule.  Final score: 14-4.

Joe Wald started on the hill for the Pirates and pitched the first 4-1/3 innings.  He was relieved by Kelly Sullivan.  The Cougars racked up nine hits leading to their fourteen runs.  However, Vashon pitching contributed to the opponent's cause by allowing seven walks, and three defensive errors led to several unearned runs as well.  Zack Drape was the hitting star once again going two for two for the day along with an RBI.  Erik Powelson was one for two with a double.  Ezra Lacina, Wald, Sullivan, Geoffrey Kraabel, Josh Myer, and Colton Alberthal all chipped in with singles.

Following the game, Coach Hall had the following remarks: “This is the kind of game that keeps you up at night. We started out strong with perfect small ball execution building an early 4-0 lead, but they’re a very quality program who have done well at state in the last couple of years and they’re going to compete and test you. I felt like we played better than the score indicated and Joe battled hard on the mound. You have to make the big plays in clutch situations and we didn’t, simple as that.  We have a 4-4 game going into the 6th if we make two plays. Instead you’re getting on the bus heading home. These guys work hard every day and they play together very well!  We are going to get there. All but two of these guys are coming back next year and they are going to be much more battle tested.  I can see them really turning this thing around!”

The line score:  Cascade Christian 14 runs, 9 hits, 0 errors    Vashon 4 runs, 9 hits, 3 errors.
Next up is an away game against Life Christian on May 7.
